House Speaker Mike Johnson has unveiled new details regarding the timeline for a report on the assassination attempt targeting former President Donald Trump.
In an appearance on Fox News' *America's Newsroom* on Thursday, Johnson addressed the recent House legislation establishing a task force dedicated to investigating the attempted assassination at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, earlier this month.
"The establishment of this task force is crucial for swift action," Johnson stated. "Speed and precision are essential. We need to deliver answers to the American people without delay."
Johnson expressed dissatisfaction with the 60-day timeline initially set by former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle for a report from the agency. "A 60-day period is too long," he remarked. "The final report is due in early December, but we expect interim reports as the investigation progresses. The task force will commence work immediately, issuing subpoenas as needed. We are committed to uncovering the full truth."
On Wednesday evening, the House unanimously passed legislation to form a bipartisan task force consisting of both Democrats and Republicans. This task force is tasked with uncovering more details about the assassination attempt on Trump.
On July 13, a gunman identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired at Trump while the former president was speaking at a campaign rally. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, was injured in the attack. One attendee was killed, and two others were critically injured. The Secret Service shot and killed Crooks at the scene.
In the aftermath, Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight Committee, where numerous lawmakers demanded her resignation. Although Cheatle initially refused to step down, the Associated Press later obtained an email in which she announced her resignation.
"I take full responsibility for the security lapse. Given the recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from my position as director," Cheatle wrote in the email, according to the AP.
Johnson also addressed the formation of the task force in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He revealed that the decision to establish the task force was made in collaboration with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
"The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump's life are deeply troubling. In response, @RepJeffries and I are creating a House Task Force, composed of seven Republicans and six Democrats, to conduct a thorough investigation," Johnson wrote. "The task force will have subpoena authority and will act swiftly to uncover the facts, ensure accountability, and prevent such failures in the future."

Why 7 & 6? Wouldn't a 50/50 split look better. It's not a court so an odd number isn't necessary.
