Mary Trump, the estranged niece and outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, stated on Tuesday that Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign "terrifies" her uncle "to the point of incoherence."
Following a disastrous debate performance against Trump on June 27, President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he was dropping out of the presidential race. His decision came after weeks of mounting pressure, and he subsequently endorsed Harris. By Monday, Harris had secured enough delegates to become the likely Democratic nominee for the presidential election, positioning her to face Trump in November. In response, Trump quickly coined the nickname "Laffin' Kamala" for Harris, indicating his probable strategy against her.
On her Substack blog, The Good in Us, Mary Trump wrote on Tuesday that her uncle had "admitted something this weekend that we all already knew—he hates being laughed at." She elaborated, "Donald also hates women (especially strong women) and minorities, so you can see why current Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris terrifies him to the point of incoherence. He says she's 'crazy.' His childish nickname for her is 'Laffin' Kamala' because she feels joy, and joy is something he has never experienced and doesn't understand."
Mary Trump suggested that the former president had "spent Sunday and Monday flailing, trying to find an angle of attack that would stick," as he confronted the reality of running against a "vibrant, intelligent, experienced woman who is fully two decades younger than he is." She continued, "Unable to do so, he kept going after Joe Biden. His advisors and co-conspirators at Fox, on the other hand, criticized Harris' personal life, her laugh, her ability to raise money. Sean Hannity, who seems to have lost the will to live, went after her for attempting to limit the use of plastic straws."
While Trump had previously offered pointed but less frequent criticism of Harris, focusing his attacks primarily on Biden, the dynamics shifted rapidly after Biden’s exit from the race. The former president unleashed a series of attacks against his new opponent, referring to her as "Lyin' Kamala Harris" on his Truth Social platform. "Lyin' Kamala Harris destroys everything she touches!" Trump wrote in a post on Tuesday.
The Harris campaign announced that it had raised over $100 million in campaign funds within 36 hours of her candidacy announcement, breaking the U.S. presidential fundraising record by collecting $81 million in the first 24 hours. The funds reportedly came from 1.1 million individual donors.
In addition to Biden's endorsement, Harris has garnered support from several key Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and California Governor Gavin Newsom, among others.
