Former U.S. President Donald Trump has attributed recent riots in the United Kingdom to the country's commitment to net zero emissions, calling the policy "self-destructive" and blaming it for economic turmoil and violence. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump took the opportunity to criticize Vice President Kamala Harris, linking her environmental policies to those in the UK.
Trump stated, "Net Zero Lunatics are currently destroying the economies of many other countries, including the UK. Their radical, self-destructive policy has led the UK to the worst economic growth since 1780, now causing economic chaos, destruction, riots, and death in the streets of British cities." However, his claim about the UK's worst economic growth since 1780 lacks clarity and specific context.
The riots in question erupted following a tragic incident in Southport, where three young girls were fatally stabbed during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. The violence, which began in Southport, quickly spread across the UK, with far-right groups reportedly targeting mosques, attacking hotels housing asylum seekers, and causing widespread property damage in various towns and cities. The unrest was fueled by online misinformation, falsely suggesting that the Southport suspect was a Muslim asylum seeker.
In his post, Trump further criticized Kamala Harris, accusing her of supporting an extreme environmental agenda. He said, "Kamala Harris supports the environmental extremists’ ‘NET-ZERO’ energy policy – a radical Left agenda to abolish coal, oil, and natural gas, and plunge MILLIONS into poverty. In the United States, net zero fanatics like Kamala Harris want to shut down power plants, even as the cost of energy and electricity is up 30 to 50% and climbing.”
The post follows a recent conversation between Trump and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who spoke with Trump for about 10 minutes last month. The call came shortly after Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. According to reports, Trump congratulated Starmer on his election victory, while the Prime Minister expressed his sympathies regarding the assassination attempt.
