In response to JD Vance's claim that Donald Trump deserves credit for the release of American hostages by Russia, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan provided a succinct rebuttal: "I don't follow."
The release, brokered by the Biden administration, involved a complex, multi-national negotiation. A total of 24 individuals were freed across several countries, including the US, Russia, Belarus, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and Norway. This operation resulted in the liberation of several notable figures: Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal journalist; Paul Whelan, a former US Marine; Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; and Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian-British political activist and journalist.
Following the news of these releases, Trump’s running mate commented during a CNN interview, expressing optimism about the return of the Americans. He stated, "I think it's great news, at least with the limited information available. We certainly want these Americans back home; it was absurd that they were imprisoned in the first place."
He further speculated, "But we need to consider—why are they coming home now? I believe it’s because bad actors around the world are aware that Donald Trump is likely to return to office, so they are clearing the decks. This is a positive development and reflects well on Donald Trump's influence."
During a press conference on Thursday, Sullivan, clearly moved, announced the release of the American detainees. Out of the 24 individuals released, three American citizens and one American green card holder returned to the US, where they were greeted by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
In return, Russia gained the freedom of several individuals: Vadim Krasikov, a Russian hitman imprisoned in Germany; Roman Seleznev, a computer hacker; Vadim Konoshchenok, a suspected Russian intelligence operative; two sleeper agents in Slovenia; an academic accused of espionage; and a man held in Poland on similar charges.
Trump, who had previously criticized Biden's handling of a potential prisoner swap, voiced his disapproval on his social media platform, Truth Social. He described the Biden Administration's negotiation efforts as an "embarrassment" and asserted that he would have secured the hostages' release without making concessions to Russia.
Trump also challenged Biden's approach during the June 27 presidential debate, suggesting that the President's failure to achieve the release sooner was due to his willingness to meet high demands. Trump remarked, "He should have had them out a long time ago. But Putin is likely asking for billions of dollars because Biden is known to comply with such demands," as reported by ABC News.
