Rachel Vindman, the wife of Alexander Vindman, a former White House staffer and key witness in Donald Trump’s first impeachment, caused controversy after appearing to make light of an apparent second assassination attempt on the former president.
Following the incident over the weekend, where 58-year-old Ryan Routh was arrested for allegedly hiding in bushes with an AK-47 at Florida's Trump International Golf Club, Vindman posted a flippant comment on the platform X (formerly Twitter). “No ears were harmed. Carry on with your Sunday afternoon,” she wrote, a reference to a previous incident in July when gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks fired at a Trump rally, injuring the former president and killing a bystander.
Rachel Vindman’s comments quickly spread across social media, shared by others over 10,000 times, and were met with widespread outrage from Trump supporters. Donald Trump Jr. condemned her remarks, calling her “demented” in a post that was reshared 17,000 times. Laura Loomer, a controversial far-right influencer and 9/11 conspiracy theorist, also blasted Vindman, accusing her of celebrating the attack.
Fox News host Laura Ingraham questioned whether key political figures like Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz should be asked to comment on Vindman’s statement, suggesting that a public rebuke was necessary. The pressure wasn’t limited to Rachel Vindman alone—critics called on her husband Alexander Vindman to denounce her remarks as well.
One such critic, Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita, mistakenly claimed that Alexander Vindman was running for office in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, though it is actually his brother Eugene Vindman who is the candidate. LaCivita’s post demanded that Alexander condemn his wife’s statement, but he responded angrily, criticizing LaCivita’s lack of integrity and accusing Trump of fueling political violence.
While Eugene Vindman expressed his concern over the attempted violence, Rachel Vindman stood by her comments, suggesting her views were her own and did not need to be rebuked by her husband. Doubling down in the face of backlash, she later posted another statement, unapologetic and critical of Trump’s role in stoking political tension.
