Donald Trump and Kamala Harris Voters Brace for Election Protests: Poll

Many Americans are preparing for the possibility of widespread protests following the announcement of the 2024 presidential election results, according to a poll conducted by The Economist/YouGov, released on Wednesday.

Respondents were asked about the likelihood of mass protests if Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump were to win the election. The results revealed that over half of those polled expected protests in both scenarios—56% if Harris won and 57% if Trump were the victor.

The 2020 election was deeply affected by the events of January 6, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, fueled by unfounded claims of election fraud. Similarly, following the 2016 election, widespread protests erupted in response to Trump's victory.

Regarding a potential Harris win, 56% of all respondents thought mass protests were either very or somewhat likely. Another 16% were unsure, while 28% believed protests were unlikely. Among Harris supporters, 65% believed protests were likely, with 8% unsure and 27% skeptical. On the other hand, 50% of Trump supporters anticipated protests if Harris won, while 15% were unsure and 35% believed protests would not occur.

When considering the possibility of a Trump victory, 57% of Americans expected mass protests, 17% were unsure, and 26% thought protests were unlikely. Among Harris supporters, 57% thought protests would occur, with 12% unsure and 31% believing protests were unlikely. For Trump supporters, 63% expected protests if he won, with 13% uncertain and 24% dismissing the possibility.

The survey, conducted from October 12-15 among 1,624 U.S. adults, had a margin of error of approximately 3%. It was weighted to account for factors such as gender, age, race, education, 2020 voter turnout, party identification, and current voter registration status.

The election remains highly competitive, with Harris and Trump often within the margin of error in polls. In key swing states likely to determine the outcome, Harris led in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Nevada, while Trump was ahead in Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina as of Tuesday.
