Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign addressed the controversy surrounding a clip of former President Donald Trump by releasing the full version on X (formerly Twitter) after accusing Fox News of selectively editing footage shown during her interview. Harris appeared on Fox News' *Special Report* with Bret Baier, where she was shown a clip of Trump during a town hall on *The Faulkner Focus*. In the clip, Trump accused Democrats of "weaponizing the government" and conducting "phony investigations."
On air, Harris challenged the clip's representation, stating: "Bret, I'm sorry, but with all due respect, that clip does not capture what Trump has been saying about the 'enemy within.' He’s repeatedly spoken about Americans in this way. That’s not what you just showed." She continued, "He’s talked about using the American military against our own people, targeting peaceful protestors, and locking up those who disagree with him."
Harris was referencing a previous interview Trump gave to Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on October 13, where he addressed President Biden’s concerns about a peaceful transition of power. During that interview, Trump remarked, "The real problem is the enemy from within... We have very bad people, radical left lunatics. If needed, they should be handled by the National Guard, or if necessary, the military."
Following the Fox News interview, Kamala Harris' campaign posted the full clip of Trump's statements on X, countering the network’s selective presentation. In the omitted portion, Trump claimed, "I wasn’t unhinged. They [Democrats] are a party of soundbites. Someone asked me if the country could be united, and I said no. The enemy is from within—Marxists, communists, and fascists."
Trump accused Democrats of fabricating the "Russia hoax," labeling them "dangerous," "sick," and "evil." Harris, in her interview, reiterated her concerns about Trump's rhetoric and its implications for the country’s future.
Despite criticisms that Harris hasn’t made enough media appearances, she addressed key issues during her interview with Baier, including immigration, abortion, and transgender healthcare. The interview reportedly boosted her election prospects, although Harris’ team cut the discussion short. Baier noted, "Madam Vice President, they’re giving me a hard wrap," signaling that Harris’ aides had intervened to end the interview early.
Reactions to the interview were mixed. Some, like Olivia Troye, a former Homeland Security adviser under Trump and Pence, praised Harris, tweeting: "VP Kamala Harris delivered a powerful interview on Fox News, proving she’s committed to being a president for ALL Americans."
However, others criticized her performance. Link Lauren, a former senior aide to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., tweeted: "Kamala Harris just finished her Fox News interview. It was an utter calamity." Additionally, Senator J.D. Vance criticized Harris for distancing herself from Biden’s presidency, calling her answers "bizarre" and questioning how she could speak as if she wasn’t part of the administration she’s been serving for over three years.
