President-elect Donald Trump's communications director has criticized reporters for spreading rumors about Trump's health after ambulances were seen leaving Mar-a-Lago on Thursday afternoon.
"The press has created a fake, unofficial 'pool' just to make themselves feel important," Cheung wrote on X. "In this case, some idiot at CBS overreacted and set off the fire alarm, thinking they'd break a big story. F***ing dummy."
Cheung’s remarks were a response to X posts from Andrew Feinberg, White House correspondent for Britain's *The Independent*. At 4:16 p.m. ET, Feinberg reported that CBS TV pool stationed near Mar-a-Lago observed "about 20-25 cars, two ambulances, and a helicopter hovering" above Trump's estate, followed by the vehicles departing shortly after. The post, which garnered 3.7 million views by Friday, triggered speculation on social media about Trump's health.
Thirty minutes later, Feinberg updated his post, stating, "CALM DOWN, PEOPLE. According to a transition source and @SecretService, the ambulances were part of Vice President-elect @JDVance’s motorcade. False alarm. Go about your business." This clarification was viewed 4 million times by Friday.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed this, dismissing the rumors. "We are not tracking any Secret Service-directed medical transports from Mar-a-Lago," Guglielmi said. "Our personnel on the ground have reported no issues or concerns with any Secret Service protectees."
Trump’s health, like that of Joe Biden, has been the subject of frequent speculation throughout the presidential campaign. At 78, Trump is set to become the oldest U.S. president upon his second inauguration in January 2025, four months older than Biden was at the start of his presidency in 2021.
The ambulances at Mar-a-Lago were part of standard protocol for JD Vance’s motorcade, not related to an emergency involving Trump or others.
Cheung’s harsh criticism of the media is consistent with his history of using sharp language to defend Trump and attack his opponents. Known for his blunt style, Cheung has previously made headlines with remarks like calling Biden "shuffles around like he has a full diaper," referring to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as a "desperate eunuch," and labeling Vice President Kamala Harris a "stone-cold loser."
A long-time Trump ally, Cheung was an adviser during the 2016 campaign and served as spokesperson for Trump’s 2024 campaign. He will be Trump’s White House communications director in the upcoming administration.
