Kamala Harris' Stepdaughter Breaks Silence After Presidential Nomination

Vice President Kamala Harris' stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, made her first social media appearance following the news that her stepmother had secured the Democratic presidential nomination.

The Associated Press reported that Harris secured the support of at least 2,668 delegates, comfortably exceeding the 1,976 delegates needed to win the nomination outright at the Democratic National Convention.

As of Tuesday morning, there were still 54 undecided delegates, according to the survey. This significant development follows President Joe Biden's July 21 announcement that he would not be seeking reelection in 2024. This decision came after mounting pressure from within his party and key Democratic donors who expressed concerns about his age and mental acuity.

Amid the heightened interest in Harris' presidential bid, British-born singer Charli XCX took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express her admiration for the former California senator in a unique way. "Kamala IS brat," she posted on July 21. This tweet quickly went viral, garnering over 46 million views.

Ella Emhoff, the 25-year-old daughter of Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, noticed Charli XCX's post. Emhoff, a model and fashion designer, shared a screenshot of the singer's post on her Instagram Story on Sunday. She responded with, "@charli_xcx gets it," and added Charli XCX's hit song "Apple" as the soundtrack to her post.

Charli XCX, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison, recently released an album titled "Brat." Since its release on June 7, singles from the album like "Girl, So Confusing" and "Apple" have become viral sensations on TikTok. The album has also inspired the "Brat Summer" movement, which celebrates defying conventions.

In a TikTok video, Charli XCX explained the concept behind "Brat": "You are just that girl who is a little messy and maybe says dumb things sometimes, who feels herself but then also maybe has a breakdown, but parties through it. It is honest, blunt, and a little bit volatile. That's Brat. Think Courtney Love in the '90s, Amy Winehouse in the early aughts, and Ke$ha in the 2010s."

Harris' campaign embraced the compliment. The @KamalaHQ account on X updated its background image to feature the neon green shade and narrow font used in the "Brat" album artwork.

Ella Emhoff signed a contract with IMG Models following Biden's 2021 inauguration. Her father is a lawyer, and her mother, Kerstin Emhoff, is a film producer. Since then, she has posed for various high-end and popular labels, including Mulberry, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Simone Rocha, Calvin Klein, Miu Miu, Lacoste, Stella McCartney, and Proenza Schouler.

Ella and her older brother, Cole Emhoff, affectionately call their stepmother "Momala." In a New York Times interview after Biden and Harris won the 2020 election, Ella Emhoff described the relationship between her parents and her stepmother as positive. "They have good communication between the three of them. They are really a unit, like a three-person parenting squad. It's really cool," she shared with the publication.
