Thousands have signed a petition initiated by the Christian organization Faithful America, pledging not to vote for Donald Trump and expressing their "horror" at his recent statements made during the Turning Point Action Believers' Summit.
The petition, launched on August 2, condemns Trump’s use of religion and labels him as a serious threat to democracy. Faithful America, a progressive Christian group that advocates for social justice and opposes "Christian nationalism," states, "The message is clear: Donald Trump—and his manipulation of religion—pose an existential threat to our democracy."
The petition references the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot as a "violent Christian-nationalist insurrection." On that day, thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory. This riot was fueled by Trump’s unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud, despite a lack of evidence to support these assertions. The insurrection resulted in one protester being shot, three additional deaths, and numerous injuries among police officers.
As of Thursday morning, the petition titled "I will vote against white Christian nationalism in 2024...and 2028" has garnered over 11,200 signatures, with the group aiming for an additional 4,000.
In late July, Trump spoke at the Believers Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida, urging Christians to vote in the upcoming election. He remarked, "Christians, get out and vote just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what? It will be fixed. It will be fine. You won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians." His comments attracted significant criticism, with some recalling his earlier statement on Fox News, where he claimed he would act as a dictator "on day one" if reelected.
Faithful America's petition describes Trump’s statements at the Florida event as "horrifying" and asserts that they "should stop your blood cold." The petition vows that signatories will use "the most powerful tool of our democracy—our ballots—to stop the man who would end it all," referring to Trump.
The organization has also criticized Project 2025, a nearly 900-page document developed by the Heritage Foundation that outlines a conservative agenda for a potential Republican administration. Although Trump has attempted to distance himself from Project 2025, claiming ignorance about its contents and authors, he reiterated one of its policy proposals in a recent interview with billionaire Elon Musk: dismantling the Department of Education. Notably, several key figures involved in Project 2025 have ties to Trump.
Faithful America's petition contends that Project 2025 represents an attempt to dismantle America's multiracial, multicultural democracy and replace it with a "Christofacist state," a term referring to Christian fascism, a far-right ideology. "It's un-American. And it's also un-Christian. So no, Donald, we Christians WILL vote—in 2024, in 2028, in 2032, and beyond," the petition asserts in its rebuttal to Trump’s remarks.
Trump has historically enjoyed strong support among evangelical and conservative white Christians. The Associated Press reports that approximately 80% of white evangelicals supported him in the 2020 election.
