Donald Trump Carves Open Biggest Arizona Poll Lead as Harris Visits Border

A new poll reveals former President Donald Trump has gained his largest lead in Arizona, coinciding with Vice President Kamala Harris’s visit to the U.S.-Mexico border as part of her campaign. The USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll, conducted between September 21 and 24, shows Trump ahead by 6 points, with 48 percent support compared to Harris’s 42 percent. The poll, which surveyed 500 voters statewide, has a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

Harris is scheduled to make her first campaign appearance at the southern border today, September 27, as she seeks to build trust on immigration—a pivotal issue in Arizona. According to the poll, 21 percent of respondents identified immigration as their top concern. A Fox News poll, released on September 26, indicated that 56 percent of voters trust Trump more on border security, while 41 percent believe Harris would handle it better.

The USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll also suggests that Harris may face challenges in securing the Latino vote in Arizona. While she holds a slight edge with 47 percent of Latino voters, Trump has managed to attract 35 percent of this critical demographic. Latino voters represent around a quarter of Arizona’s 1.3 million registered voters.

Harris’s primary immigration policy focuses on reviving a bipartisan border bill that was blocked by Senate Republicans, including JD Vance, after Trump opposed it to elevate immigration as a key election issue. The bill was also rejected by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for being overly punitive and lacking sufficient support for long-term U.S. residents.

This new poll contrasts with a recent Bloomberg Morning Consult survey, conducted between September 19 and 25, which showed Harris leading Trump by 3 points. However, Trump’s advantage was echoed in the latest Fox News poll, where he led by 3 points.

Arizona, with its 11 electoral college votes, is crucial for both candidates in the race to reach 270 electoral votes. Meanwhile, the Senate race in Arizona paints a different picture, as Democrat Ruben Gallego holds a comfortable lead over Republican Kari Lake. The Fox News poll, published on September 26, shows Gallego polling at 55 percent among likely voters and 56 percent among registered voters, far ahead of Lake’s 42 percent.

The poll indicates that many Arizona voters intend to split their tickets. Independent voters are 16 points more likely to back Gallego over Harris, while 10 percent of Republicans plan to vote for Gallego but not Harris. Only 3 percent of respondents said they would vote for both Lake and Harris.
