James Carville Slams Dems Use Of Identity Politics: 'So Freaking Arrogant'

Political strategist James Carville recently expressed concerns about the language used in political discourse, particularly within the Democratic Party. He believes that relying on broad, umbrella terms to describe diverse groups of people comes across as "so freaking arrogant." Carville, speaking on the Playbook Deep Dive podcast, criticized the party for not using plain, everyday language that would better connect with voters.

"I tell the identity community, or whatever they want to call themselves, that I want the same things they want," Carville said. "But if the goal is to create a more inclusive society, where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, and where the wealthy pay their fair share to support those less fortunate, then why not communicate that in a way people actually understand?"

Carville also suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris doesn’t need to emphasize her demographics, noting that the public already knows she is a woman of Black and Indian descent. "You don't have to tell people," he said. "Give the public some credit."

Known for his role as the lead strategist in former President Bill Clinton's successful 1992 campaign, Carville has a long history in Democratic politics. More recently, he advocated for President Joe Biden to step aside from the 2024 election. However, he expressed discomfort with being a prominent voice in that conversation, stating on MSNBC that he "became the person I've always hated."

Carville continued his critique of the Democratic Party's language, calling terms like "progressive liberal" and "communities of color" confusing and patronizing. He finds the term "LGBTQ+" problematic because it assumes that all non-heterosexual people are alike. "That's not true at all," he said. "It's so freaking arrogant."

Polling data from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and Community Marketing & Insights shows that three-quarters of LGBTQ voters support Vice President Harris in the upcoming election. The survey, conducted in August 2024, found that 95 to 96 percent of LGBTQ Gen Z, millennial, and Gen X voters are registered, with 77 percent planning to vote for Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz. Conversely, around 8 percent of LGBTQ voters intend to vote for Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance.
