As the Votes Begin to Roll in, Donald Trump Has Already Failed | Opinion

Former President Donald Trump's primary strategy to undermine Kamala Harris has collapsed—completely. And he has no one to hold responsible but himself.

From the outset, Trump and his team understood that the only viable path for the unpopular ex-president, who has never won more than 47 percent of the vote in any election, wasn't to boost his own popularity. Instead, they aimed to drag Harris down.

Trump’s top priority was to define Harris negatively before she could define herself. This was critical, especially during pivotal moments such as the debate and Labor Day, when voters began paying serious attention to the race. Making her unfavorable in the public’s eyes was essential if Trump hoped to reclaim the presidency.

However, recent NBC polling reveals Trump’s massive failure. The data shows a 16-point surge in Harris' favorability since July, when she was still running as Vice President Biden’s candidate. This leap marks the largest increase in favorability for any major-party presidential candidate in the 35-year history of the NBC News poll.

A double-digit favorability rise during a heated presidential campaign is virtually unheard of. In a country as polarized as the U.S., where politicians are often viewed as poorly as used car salespeople or communicable diseases, Harris’ achievement is extraordinary.

While Harris' campaign deserves much of the credit for running a nearly flawless operation, Trump’s job was to define her negatively—and he failed, spectacularly. If Harris is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States next January, Trump’s inability to damage her popularity over these last crucial weeks will be a significant reason why.

Trump’s failure wasn’t due to a lack of time or resources. Over the 10 weeks since Biden dropped out, Trump has had ample opportunity and financial backing. Instead, this failure is a result of his erratic, narcissistic, and self-destructive tendencies, traits that have often been exaggerated in terms of political effectiveness.

Rather than spending time in battleground states or crafting a focused message against Harris, Trump has spent more time on golf courses and pushing bizarre conspiracy theories. His gift for controlling the media cycle has been wasted on absurd claims about windmills causing cancer, Hannibal Lecter references, and rehashing grievances from the 2020 election that even loyal Fox News viewers struggle to follow.

In an inexplicable move, Trump has also used these crucial weeks to promote watches, cryptocurrency, shoes, and a coffee table book. While he may be laughing all the way to the bank as his supporters continue to pour money into these ventures, Harris and the Democrats may have the final laugh, benefiting from Trump’s self-indulgence.

As early voting starts in many states, the window for Trump to change Harris’ favorability is rapidly closing.

Has Trump lost his shot at winning the White House? It’s too soon to say definitively.

But with evidence that the Republican Electoral College advantage is shrinking, Harris holding more cash, momentum, and a superior ground game, and Election Day approaching, Harris appears to have the edge.

If she emerges victorious, Republicans will likely look back at Trump’s failure to execute the most basic of strategies over these past 10 weeks as a key reason why.

  1. this sounds like more leftist wishful thinking being that Trump has been climbing in the polls and kamala has been stagnant since her failed debate. Walz was a disaster they both tried to lie repeatedly and got fact checked even by CNN. several MSM pundits have admitted she doesn't answer direct questions with direct concise answers. every one of her 1 on 1s have left interviewers confused and dumbfounded in that she is incapable of answering questions. He ploy is the hide out as much as possible. Her staff does not want her to speak w/o a teleprompter because she is not well versed on the issues or policy. Joe Biden has stated she was just as involved in policy as he was and holds just as much responsibility for the decision in the Biden Harris admin. I realize its imperative that you publish as much exaggerated and false content to hopefully keep progressive liberals engaged with hopes of turning out the votes. But this will continue to be a difficult endeavor as the day gets closer because states are clearing non-citizens from voter rolls and forcing democrats to become desperate. You know they are very scared, so scared they are willing to kill to stop Trump. You say Trump is a threat to democracy but the truth is democrats efforts to keep RFK Jr and Jill Stein off the democrat ticket tells you that they know kamala is weak and cant speak on her own with any intelligence on the issues citizens are concerned about.

    2. I find it quite naive to attribute the rise in the popularity ratings for Kamala Harris to much other than an extremely favorable media presence despite the fact that she said very little in the way of actual interviews. She went from a quite unpopular vice president to the most qualified person possible to become president without doing much of anything. And before you blame my perspective on being a MAGA or Trump supporter, or whatever, I am far from impressed with either individual as a candidate. I just find it unfortunate that the vast majority of media outlets have become little more than political activists with their thumb on the scale instead of being truly impartial agents of a free and independent press.

  3. I think you are naive in thinking that Americans should think that a convicted Felon, Fraudster and sexual molester, habitual liar and narcissist, failed business person with more than 5 bankruptcies, would be suitable for the leadership of America. Also the laughing stock of the Western World.
