Donald Trump Gushes About Melania's Homeland in Meeting With Slovenia PM

Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, expressed admiration for Slovenia, his wife Melania's homeland, during a meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob. The interaction occurred on December 7 in Paris, where world leaders gathered to celebrate the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, restored following a devastating fire in 2019.

The event, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, drew 1,500 dignitaries, including U.S. First Lady Jill Biden, U.K.'s Prince William, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to a statement from Golob's office, the meeting with Trump was cordial. "The conversation between the two leaders took place in a friendly spirit, and U.S. President Trump did not hide his enthusiasm for the homeland of his wife and her family," the statement read.

The discussion took place during a gala dinner at the Élysée Palace, which followed the reopening ceremony of the 861-year-old cathedral. Golob attended the event with his partner, Tina Gaber.

Earlier, Trump met with President Macron at the Élysée Palace, marking his first international trip since securing victory in the 2024 presidential election.

Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar had also spoken with Trump shortly after his election. In a phone call, the two reaffirmed bilateral ties and discussed the war in Ukraine, with Pirc Musar emphasizing a resolution grounded in the U.N. Charter's principles.

Melania Trump, born in Slovenia and now a naturalized U.S. citizen, served as First Lady during Trump’s first term in office from 2017 to 2021. During that time, she did not visit Slovenia officially or unofficially.

As the first naturalized citizen to serve as First Lady, and the second foreign-born First Lady after Louisa Adams, Melania is set to make history again. When her husband returns to the White House on January 20, 2025, she will become only the second First Lady to serve two nonconsecutive terms, following in the footsteps of Frances Cleveland.
