Prince William's Meeting with Donald Trump Draws Criticism from Activist Meghan Markle Praised

Prince William's meeting with President-elect Donald Trump in Paris has come under scrutiny, particularly from Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, a campaign group Meghan Markle previously lauded for its efforts to end gun violence in America.  

Watts, who established Moms Demand Action in 2012 following the Sandy Hook tragedy, voiced her disapproval on X (formerly Twitter) after images surfaced of William and Trump together at the reopening ceremony of Notre Dame Cathedral.  

Watts posted: *"I probably wouldn't meet with a man who said he could have f***** my mom and demanded to see naked photos of my wife, but what do I know,"* alongside screenshots of Trump’s past controversial remarks about Princess Diana and Princess Kate.  

The first screenshot highlighted an excerpt from Christopher Andersen’s biography *The King: The Life of Charles III,* recounting Trump’s claims during a Howard Stern interview that he could have “nailed” Princess Diana if she had passed an HIV test. In the interview, Trump asserted he believed he could have pursued Diana successfully after her divorce.  

The second image revisited Trump’s 2012 tweets about Princess Kate, in which he criticized her for sunbathing topless on private property, calling her actions a mistake and implying any photographer would capitalize on the opportunity.  

Watts’ criticism of the meeting also followed a lighthearted earlier post showing William and Trump together, captioned with upside-down smiley emojis: *"🙃🙃🙃."*  

Meghan Markle previously expressed admiration for Watts’ work in 2022. In a letter to Moms Demand Action, written after her visit to Uvalde following the Robb Elementary School shooting, Meghan praised their dedication, writing:  

*"To each of you and your fearless leader, Shannon, a huge thank you for the work you are doing to keep our kids, families, and communities safe... As a mom, as a friend, thank you so much!"*  

In Britain, William’s diplomatic engagement with Trump is seen as part of efforts to strengthen the U.K.-U.S. relationship under the Labour government. However, Trump's controversial reputation in the U.K. has added complexity to the prince's role, with critics accusing the president-elect of reducing William to a "fanboy."
