At a campaign rally in Atlanta on Saturday night, Donald Trump, the 78-year-old Republican presidential candidate, faced scrutiny for his speech after stumbling over words and phrases. Critics on social media quickly seized on these verbal mishaps as potential signs of cognitive decline.
During the rally, Trump struggled with several key terms: he pronounced "wrecking" as "reckting," "mobs" as "marbs," and mistakenly said "place" instead of "police" before correcting himself. His statements included: “Together we will stop Kamala Harris’ nation reckting… I’ll tell you what…” followed by a shift in topic, and later: “She will not stop, she said she was endorsing defund the place, and, the police, and she said violent marbs, let the violent mobs keep going.”
These verbal errors sparked a wave of concern online, with some users describing them as “glitches” and expressing worries about Trump’s age and mental fitness. The Harris campaign's official account, @KamalaHQ, shared the first video clip of Trump’s remarks on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: "Trump glitches: 'Together we will stop Kamala Harris’ nation reckting— akfjslk I’ll tell you what…'" The post garnered over 500,000 views by Sunday morning.
Another clip was posted by @Acyn, a digital editor for the Trump-critical media network Meidas Touch, who highlighted Trump’s “glitching heavily” with comments about defunding the "place" and “violent marbs.” This post received more than 1 million views by the next day.
The Meidas Touch main account shared the clip as well, commenting: “This is sad. He is declining fast. His brain is mush. This decline will only rapidly accelerate.” Similarly, the account @MuellerSheWrote expressed concern, stating: “He’s not well. The media should talk about it.” Democratic strategist @AdamParkhomenko also weighed in, noting: “I’m surprised the media is not asking more questions about why no one around him is intervening with what is a clear and continual decline. We should also talk about his age.” Political analyst @TimOBrien, from MSNBC, pointed out that such verbal blunders are indicative of a noticeable decline, saying: “Trump has degraded noticeably in recent years and senior moments like this are just another reminder.”
In addition to these verbal missteps, Trump reiterated his false claim of winning Georgia in the 2020 election, a state he lost to President Joe Biden. He also referred to Biden as a “bad precedent” instead of “president,” and described Kamala Harris as “a low IQ individual.” Trump criticized the recent prisoner swap with Russia, calling it “a horrible, horrible deal.”
Throughout his campaign, Trump has made a series of bizarre statements and gaffes, fueling ongoing debates about his age and cognitive health. For instance, he has erroneously linked the fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter to illegal immigration, which some critics suggest may be due to a confusion between asylum-seekers and insane asylums. In another instance, Trump delivered an incoherent rant involving sharks, boats, and batteries.
The issue of age has been a significant concern for voters. Prior to Biden’s announcement in July that he would not seek reelection, both his and Trump’s ages were highlighted as major factors. A February poll by ABC News and IPSOS revealed that 59 percent of voters felt both candidates were too old for the presidency. If elected, Trump would become the oldest person inaugurated as U.S. president.
Trump has previously criticized Biden’s occasional verbal gaffes and mental lapses, calling him “cognitively impaired” and an “old broken down pile of c***.” A more recent poll shows that a majority of Republicans would prefer a president younger than 75.
Kamala Harris, at 59, aims to leverage her relative youth and popularity among younger voters as she competes against Trump in the 2024 election.
