Gavin Newsom's Defiant Trump Video Goes Viral: 'We Will Stand Firm'

California Governor Gavin Newsom's bold response to President-elect Donald Trump's victory has rapidly gained attention on social media.

With Trump's election win on Tuesday, Newsom, a Democrat with possible national aspirations, finds himself once again positioned as a leading figure in his party's resistance to Trump's forthcoming presidency.

"I want our president to succeed," Newsom stated in a video posted to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. "But our job, my job, isn't to wake up every day with a crowbar, trying to derail the Trump administration."

He continued, "I'm not naive, and we are pragmatic. We will stand firm."

The video, which has garnered over 8 million views and 100,000 likes, highlighted Newsom's concerns about the Trump administration's plans. He referenced Project 2025, a 922-page roadmap from the Heritage Foundation outlining Trump’s agenda for his second term. Newsom called this document Trump’s "playbook" and "to-do list," noting that it included 270 points the president-elect has endorsed. "If our American values and freedoms are under attack, we will not remain silent," Newsom declared.

Following Trump's victory, Newsom urged California lawmakers to convene a special session aimed at protecting the state's progressive policies in light of Trump's second term. On Thursday, Newsom's office confirmed that he was pushing for increased funding for the California Attorney General's office to defend the state's laws against any federal challenges from the incoming administration. Newsom's team expressed their intent to "Trump-proof" California's policies.

In response, Trump took to Truth Social, referring to Newsom as "Governor Gavin Newscum." He accused Newsom of trying to "KILL" California and criticized his efforts to "Trump-Proof" the state as obstructing initiatives that could "Make California Great Again."

Other Democratic governors and attorneys general from blue states are also preparing to counter Trump's plans, including his proposed mass deportation program. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey vowed that her state would "absolutely not" cooperate with such efforts, while New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy pledged to fight "to the death" against policies that contradict his state's values.

In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul has assembled a task force to safeguard residents against potential threats from the Trump administration, especially in areas like immigration, reproductive rights, and civil liberties.

Meghan Meehan-Draper, Executive Director of the Democratic Governors Association, expressed that Democratic governors would be the "last line of defense" for rights and values. She emphasized, "As we brace for the possibility of lawlessness and extremism once again, Americans can count on Democratic governors to stand up for freedoms and democracy."
