A video showing a member of Kamala Harris’ campaign staff halting the Vice President’s speech has gone viral on social media.
At around 12:30 a.m., campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond informed supporters that Harris would not be speaking at her watch party at Howard University in Washington, D.C. due to the ongoing vote count.
“We still have votes to count, and we still have states that have not been called yet,” Richmond stated.
A video posted by CBS News reporter Nidia Cavazos at 12:39 a.m. ET captured a campaign staffer instructing film crews to turn off the lights at the event. "Lights off," the staffer said while gesturing toward the cameras.
The video has been viewed over 478,000 times by 2:49 a.m. ET.
In an email to campaign staff, Harris campaign chief Jen O'Malley-Dillon explained that the race remained undecided. The message, which circulated widely on social media, reinforced that the delay was expected.
"We've been saying for weeks that this race might not be decided tonight. Those of you who were around in 2020 know it takes time for all the votes to be counted," O'Malley-Dillon wrote. “This is how our system works."
She added, "What we do know is that this race won’t come into focus until the early morning hours.”
O'Malley-Dillon concluded by reassuring the team that they would be kept updated and emphasized the importance of staying focused: "Let’s finish what we have in front of us tonight, get some sleep, and be ready to close out strong tomorrow."
